How to find your first job when you have no experience?
We want to give you some useful advice on how to enter the world of work even if your resume doesn't have much to say. First of all, we'll start with your skills, talk about how to get hired, your resume, and when to start looking for a job.
1. How to find your first job
1.1 First job and first steps
You have just finished your studies and are looking to the world of work with the hope of finding your first job. You are probably still asking yourself “what do I want to do when I grow up?” Don't worry, it's normal! And maybe you think you don't have any work experience to put on your resume. Well, there's nothing wrong with that. Here we will give you some useful answers to the doubts of those who are entering the world of work and don't yet know where to start.
First of all, let's plan your launch into the job market and analyze what you can do. Do you really have no experience? Impossible. Before writing your resume, try to understand what you want to communicate to others. Do you have a diploma? Do you have a bachelor's degree? A master's degree? Great, let's put it down on paper.
Now think about the jobs you did during your studies, the activities you did perhaps simply out of passion; those are “jobs” too. They can also help a recruiter determine your skills for the job you are applying for. Did you know that not all professions require these qualifications?
2. How to get hired without experience
We've talked about the first steps to finding your first job, now let's talk about how to get hired without experience. At Toscano, for example, we also involve candidates with no experience in real estate in the initial interviews. For our profession, it is essential to have a high school diploma, but then there are other parameters that determine whether or not we choose a candidate. For example, we focus a lot on what are known as soft skills.
2.1 What are soft skills and why are they important for your first job?
Soft skills are the skills that characterize you for who you are, not for your educational background. These skills are very important to companies, and they are what make them choose one candidate over another. If you are applying for your first job, highlight them!
What should you do before writing your resume? Analyze what you can do and what you are good at. If you are athletic and love running, you are probably also a consistent person. If you like video games, you surely know what it means to level up, set a goal, and achieve it. If you are outgoing and able to organize meetings and group trips with your friends, perhaps you have excellent budget and team management skills (how difficult is it to get everyone to agree on something?). Then you have probably done some babysitting, run errands for friends and relatives, or worked on some group projects at school. These experiences have certainly brought out your soft skills, but you haven't put them down on paper yet. Do it now!
2.2 Here are some soft skills required of candidates as Toscano real estate agents
- good interpersonal skills
- seriousness and humility
- curiosity and willingness to learn
- dedication to work
- ability to learn from mistakes
- dynamism
- energy management
- proactivity and resourcefulness
- ambition and determination
These are some of the soft skills we look for in candidates, and you will find that they are essential in all sectors of work. So if you want to put yourself out there and build a career, make sure they stand out in your resume and, consequently, in your interviews. Show that you know how to listen and that you care about your goals. This first phase of looking for your first job will teach you how to deal with rejection. However, it will also allow you to grow and understand even better which skills to focus on.
Remember: when you go to your first interviews, be prepared about the company that has contacted you and don't answer the question “Tell me a weakness of yours” with “I'm too nice.”
3. When to start looking for a job
There is no specific time to start looking for a job. If a company needs a new employee, it needs one, period. However, it is true that there are usually periods when more job openings are available, and these often coincide with September-October and January-February. September and October are especially good months to look for a new job. When people return from vacation, companies are much more responsive. There may have been resignations during the summer months, so they find themselves with only a few months to replace those who are leaving. June, July, and August may be less suitable months, as we approach the summer break and many companies begin planning their recruitment phase for September. This does not mean that you cannot apply for open positions in the meantime. At Toscano, we receive and process your applications all year round. However, at certain times of the year, we focus more on finding new talent with specific activities such as Hiring Days, Open Days, and social media communications about open positions. Anyone interested in discovering the real estate sector can apply on the Work with us page of the Toscano.it portal.
4. How to write a resume for your first job
It only takes a few moments to catch a recruiter's attention. Therefore, your resume must have characteristics that allow it to stand out at first glance. Think about your reaction when you were given pages and pages of dense text to read at school, without any breaks or images. Extracting the information was tiring and tedious. If you wrote your first CV like this, then it's time to change it. Remember: appearance matters. A well-summarized text with the main points highlighted and easy to read will give you an edge.
Here are 5 tips for writing a resume even if you have no experience:
Clearly highlight your professional or educational qualifications and clearly include the dates and locations of your educational experiences. Showcase your strengths: it's time for soft skills! List the courses, leadership activities, and responsibilities you have undertaken. List any volunteer experience, showcasing your ethics and skills. Highlight all your work experience, even if it is short-term or part-time, such as babysitting, waitressing, etc. List your social media skills, as many employers often need someone to support them, and not everyone has the right qualifications to do so. Make yourself easy to find! Make sure you have a professional profile on LinkedIn and let your friends and family know that you are looking for work. How to dress for your first interview
5. How to dress for your first interview
Some companies and professions have strict dress codes. Therefore, try to look neat and well-groomed when you go for an interview. Add a positive and helpful attitude, and you'll have two factors that will help you attract attention and make a good impression even before you've spoken.
In Tuscany, elegant and formal attire is expected for both men and women. Our work is based largely on the presence and image we convey to customers, so in this case, clothes do make the man.
